To start, let’s give you a little bit background.

Moissanite was originally born from a meteorite over 50,000 years ago. In 1893, Nobel Prize winning chemist Dr. Henri Moissan discovered tiny crystals of silicon carbide in an Arizona meteorite. He successfully identified these sparkling crystals as a new mineral, “silicon carbide,” with the chemical composition SiC (diamonds are also made from carbon).

However, moissanite crystals are almost impossible to find in nature. Scientists worked for a century to find a way to recreate these extremely rare, brilliant silicon carbide crystals. In 1995, Charles & Colvard was founded to cut, polish, and bring to market the first and finest created moissanite.

Moissanite displays 10% more brilliance than diamond and has nearly 2.4 times the “fire” (aka sparkle) too. Its hardness (resistance to scratching) and toughness (resistance to breaking) are exceptional. On the Mohs scale of hardness, moissanite is rated as a 9.25, which means it is harder than all other gemstones, such as sapphire or ruby, except diamond (diamonds are the hardest known mineral, scoring a 10 on the scale).

All moissanites, have the same fire, brilliance, hardness and toughness. The main differences between the varieties will be the color and price.

Forever One Colorless Moissanite

Forever One Colorless Moissanite is the whitest among these three grades. It has a color grading of D-E-F, meaning it’s considered colorless by GIA standards. If you are looking for a white/colorless stone set in white gold setting, Forever One Colorless Moissanite is the right choice for your dream engagement ring.

In recent years, setting stones such as diamond or moissanite in rose gold has become popular. Even though Forever One Colorless Moissanite is “colorless,” a rose or yellow gold setting gives it a warm appearance as the stone will glow and reflection the setting. Forever One Colorless Moissanite is the most expensive among the moissanite varieties. Fortunately, unlike diamond, the price difference among these three grades is small, so it’s still an affordable option for your engagement ring.

Forever One Near Colorless Moisssanite

Forever One Near Colorless Moisssanite has a color grading of G-H-I (near-colorless). It appears as white as forever one colorless moissanite, but with a tint of yellowish tone when viewed at certain angles.

Forever Brilliant Moissanite

The least expensive is Forever Brilliant Moissanite. It’s also graded in G-H-I range of the color, but its tone is actually like I-J, which can appear quite yellowish. If you prefer a warmer toned stone, Forever Brilliant Moissanite will moissanite attractive. However, Charles & Colvard has decided to discontinue Forever Brilliant Moissanite, so supplies are limited.
